October 8th: This is officially the last leg of my
amazing journey. A hard day of driving
from Morgan Hill to Bakersfield lay ahead.
All the orchards that disappeared making way for Silicon Valley suddenly
reappeared around Gilroy. Gilroy still
smells of wonderful garlic and I mean that sincerely. For my eastern friends, Gilroy is the garlic
capital of the world.
I also marveled at the numerous rose farms that I don’t
remember. There is the famous Rose
Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day, perhaps these are the roses destined
for the parade or maybe they are shipped back east for Valentine's Day.
The roadways that once had many fruit and vegetable tables selling
their goods have vanished. I thought I
would get fresh goodies as I went but no such luck. I drove over the mountain pass that separates
the coastal valley from the interior valley of southern California via Pacheco
Pass and the San Luis Reservoir and never saw a fruit stand. What’s up with that?

Bakersfield was a brief stopover. A kind of weariness is setting in and I hope it doesn’t last long. I am missing home and family.
Oct. 9th: Arose early and headed for Las Vegas. Finally, I succumbed to an audio book to pass
the time. The desert scenery was a bit
boring at times as I passed Death Valley to the north and Mexico to the south. I was looking forward to the bright lights
and excitement of Las Vegas as an evening’s entertainment. Pulled into a great park and got set up with
plenty of time to spare. Maybe a nice
nap before setting out as the sun was going down. The next thing I remembered was the sun
coming up. I slept though it all – what
a waste. I had to accept that my body
had a different agenda.

I did not miss everything!
