BRYCE CANYON, UTAH

Despite its name, Bryce Canyon has no great rivers running through it and is not even a canyon, but a series of amphitheaters carved into the edge of a high plateau.  Among its most recognizable features are the hoodoos sticking straight up like sandstone stalagmites.  The hoodoos glow with golden reddish hues as the morning sunlight engulfs them.  Natural arches are formed when rain and frost erosion carve an opening through a thin slab of rock.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.   There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature – the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” ~ Rachel Carson
